The etymology of the word healing is the Old English hælan, which means ‘to make whole’

I experienced a moment of joyful recognition when I read this (in David Key and Keith Tudor’s excellent Ecotherapy: A Field Guide). For me, this word or idea, of healing as being ’to make whole’, names one of the most powerful things that counselling (in the relational, integrative form that I practice) can offer. Counselling can help us to learn about, and experience, the whole of ourselves. It can help us to (re)discover feelings, needs, desires and dislikes that we might have denied in order to fit in or feel accepted. A counsellor can support us in accepting parts of ourselves that might be difficult to face and welcome the gifts that turning towards them might bring. Counselling can help us to get through tough times, when things break down or fall apart, and help us to figure out how we’d like to repair or re-build.
